We purchased the Summer Infant “Night and Day” handheld monitor when our baby was born (I’ll get around to how this relates to the “Secure Sight” system you’re expecting to read about). Around the 8 month mark the sound started to “go” … we’d see the ‘red’ but wouldn’t hear anything. Since the monitor was less than 1 year old I contacted Summer Infant customer support, and was told that if I could prove my handheld was purchased less than 1 year ago they would replace it with the “Secure Sight” handheld monitor. (for some reason they wouldn’t send a new “Night and Day”, and FYI: save your receipt!). Before agreeing to the trade I checked it out and saw that the Secure Sight unit itself was/is more streamlined than the “Night and Day” model, but noticed the price was a bit less. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I agreed to the swap. We set it up and I couldn’t be more disappointed. The picture isn’t nearly as sharp as the “Night and Day”, it’s a step above poor and I can barely distinguish my baby from the crib mattress. With the Night and Day I could actually see his breathing if I wanted to – with the Secure Sight it’s more like looking at a fuzzy shape of what’s most likely my baby.
Second, the power cord is very short compared to the “Night and Day” and we have to use an extension cord to make it to the outlet (we didn’t need an extension cord with the “Night and Day”). Recommendation: pay the extra $30 for the “Night and Day” if you’re considering either of these, or even better… save yourself the trouble altogether by avoiding them both. I’ve never written a product review before this one, but sincerely hope it helps a few folks with their decision.

With a little one, you can imagine it’s not hard to accidentally drop your monitor. Ours fell from about 36 inches off the ground (from our night stand). The plug end broke off into the monitor, which we cannot get out. There are only two screws on the back and it doesn’t seem like you can “operate” on it yourself to get the end of the plug out. (We are afraid to open it.) So, we now have a broken monitor (AND charging cord), which Summer Infant does not sell separately. Looks like we’re completely out of luck since we got this as a shower gift and have no proof of purchase for their 12 month window (plus the manufacture date is beyond that AND the shower was well before our baby’s birth date – making it way past 12 months, despite less than that in terms of usage time). We really did like it – good reception, great picture, good distance for receiver. A terrible flaw in that for a baby item, it is not very durable! We will be forced to replace this with another brand – it’s not worth the risk of this happening again.

UPDATE: We called Summer Infant and they had us send it back to them. (Should have done this the second it broke!) They replaced it VERY quickly and we are happy again. For the record, we bought another one – the 3.5″ Motorola monitor. By comparison, the picture on the Motorola is terrible! Our Summer Infant monitor is far superior in terms of picture as well as lack of interference. Had I realized ALL of this, I would have bought another Summer Infant. Too late now, but maybe you can learn from our mistakes!

We bought this monitor when we brought our preemie daughter home from the hospital so we could visual see her oxygen and heart rate monitor. The video is very clear, and works wonderfully at night. The sound is exceptionally clear. We have used the Graco digital with our first son and went thru three of them from the sound going out and battery dying. Very impressed at how well the unit transmits, especially since we live in an apartment. No interference at all. THe only issue we have had is that after 4 nights the LED light on the reciever died and you could not see the image hardly at all. Summer replaced it and we’ve had no issues further. I would highly recommend this product.
